Coffea Canephora:
Worlds Most Diverse & Misunderstood Coffee Species
Mikolaj Pociecha is known in the coffee industry for his roles as a barista, roaster, quality lead, and writer specializing in Coffea Canephora. Over the past five years, he has authored two books on Coffea Canephora, culminating in his self-published book from 2025, titled “Robusta/Canephora – A Brief Guide to Loving It.” This book brings together insights from journalists, producers, scientists, and baristas, covering topics such as history, genetics, sensory evaluation, roasting, and brewing, while presenting Robusta in a positive light.
Mikolaj is the current 3rd Dutch Brewers Cup Champion and made history by bringing two non-Arabica species to the national competition finals. In previous competitions, he focused on using the platform for raising awareness about challenges in the industry—such as inclusivity, cultural appropriation, and species diversity—rather than pursuing titles.
Currently, Mikolaj is based in Amsterdam, where he founded Chunky Cherry, a small roastery that specializes in climate-resilient coffee species like Canephora, Excelsa, and Liberica.
After the talk Mikolaj will host a cupping at the Cupping Corner.
